This 19th-century needlework sampler is dated 1894 and signed “Mary Southward. Aged 12 1894.” It features stitched uppercase and lowercase alphabets, numbers 1-8, and a four-line religious verse. Decorative motifs include a house, trees, birds, butterflies, and floral elements. The sampler is executed in thread on a fabric ground and presented under glass within a wooden frame with a gilt inner fillet. There is overall age discoloration to the fabric and minor wear to the frame. Two modern inventory stickers are affixed to the glass.
